Title:A controllable interface in ZnO nanowires–hybridized carbon fiber composites: A numerical and experimental study
Author:Hongxiao Wang, Yugang Duan, Ben Wang
Abstract: The Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) is a key parameter to determine the service performance of a carbon fiber (CF) reinforced composite. ZnO nanowires (ZWs) grow on the CF surface is a new method to reinforce the IFSS, where ZWs grow radially on carbon fibers to form a hybrid reinforcing phase. But the properties of ZWs are significantly different with varying ZW dimensions, in turn, causes a change in IFSS hence affecting the CFRP performance. To evaluate the optimal interfacial properties of CF composites, a micro-damage model was conducted to study the adhesive properties of a single ZW pullout from the matrix with varying dimensions of ZWs. The cohesive zone approach was used to model the interface between ZWs and the matrix. The simulation results showed that adhesive properties betweenZWs and epoxy increasewith the increase of ZWs’ diameterand length. A pullout test was also conducted to determine the interfacial shear properties of the hybrid CF composites and verify the results of numerical values.
Title:Dose control of double-sided irradiation for polymer-matrix composites fabricated by in-situ curing with low energy E-Beam

Abstract:
The electron beam with energies lower than 150keV is applicable in in-situ curing of polymer-matrix composites but poor in penetration ability, leading to significantly attenuation of irradiation dose along the prepreg thickness. Experimental results in this paper show that laminates fabricated by prepregs single-sided irradiated are low in ILSS owing to incomplete curing at 180 ℃ for 30min. A double-sided irradiation method which includes equal dose and different doses on both sides of the prepreg is proposed to conquer this difficulty. Analysis show that under a total dose of 115kGy, 130kGy, 145kGy and 160kGy, the ILSS results get a biggest increase of 10.6%, 15.9%, 17% and 37.7% respectively by tuning the dose differences between both sides of the prepregs. Larger dose difference decreased the ILSS of the laminate because of the weakened physical and chemical bonding owing to higher curing degree and larger curing synchronicity difference.
Title:Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles-coated Aramid Fiber Showing Enhanced Interfacial Strength and UV resistance properties
Author:Ben Wang, Yugang Duana, Jingjing Zhang
Abstract:
Titaniumdioxidenanoparticles (TiO2 NP) were grown on aramid fiber (AF) by a low-temperature hydrothermal method with the aim to enhance the poor interfacial strength and the UV resistance properties of the fiber material. Prior to the growing process, AF was functionalized to increase the fiber-TiO2 NP bonding strength. The structure, interface strength, and UV resistance properties of the resulting TiO2 NP-modified fiber material were investigated. Anatase TiO2 NP were uniformly grown on the fiber surface while controlling the TiO2 particle size upon addition of polyethylene glycol(PEG). The growth of TiO2 NP increased the interaction area and reduced the stress concentration between the fiber and the matrix material. The experimental testing results revealed a significant improvement (by 40–67%) in the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) upon development of the TiO2 NP interphase while essentially maintaining the basic strength of the fiber material. Unlike other TiO2-coating methodologies such as sol-gel and sizing, the herein developed process, leading to complete anatase TiO2 NP coating, provided the fiber with effective UV-rays protection characteristics while retaining most of the tensile strength (87.1–90.5%) after long UV irradiation exposure (168 h).
