PART 1: Reflections on Two Years at UVa as a CSC Visiting Scholar
Abstract
The CSC (China Scholarship Council) scholarship is a national scholarship program financing outstanding Chinese student to study at top universities around the world. I have been sponsored by the CSC since September 2016 to conduct a two-year research in Professor Marek-Jerzy Pindera’s group at the University of Virginia. In my presentation, I will talk about my adventures at the UVa during the past two years. I will also talk about three projects that I have conducted at UVa in collaboration with Professor Pindera, his PhD student, Zhelong He, and his ex-PhD students, Drs. Guannan Wang and Wenqiong Tu. The first one is homogenization and localization of nano-porous materials with surface energy effect; the second one is viscoelastic analysis of heterogenous materials via elastic-viscoelastic principles; and the third one is simulating elastic-plastic response of metal matrix composites with evolving damage.
Bio Sketch of Mr. Qiang Chen
Qiang Chen is a fifth year Ph.D. student in Professor Xuefeng Chen’s group in the school of mechanical engineering at the Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an, China. He is sponsored by the China Scholarship Council to conduct a two-year research as a visiting PhD student during September 2016-August 2018 under the supervision of Professor Marek-Jerzy Pindera in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Virginia. His research is focused on the study of the finite-volume based homogenization technique and the application of the computational mechanics techniques for multiscale analyses of heterogeneous media with different microstructural architectures with the ultimate aim of achieving better understanding of the local multiphysics mechanisms in order to develop and design materials and structures with superior properties. Qiang Chen has published 12 archival journal papers in his area and 3 refereed conference papers.
PART 2: PROGRESSIVE FRACTURE OF BRITTLE-DUCTILE PHASE LAMINATES
会议名称:14th International Conference on Fracture
会议时间:June 18-23, 2017
会议地点:Rhodes, Greece
会议简介:Founded by Professor T. Yokobori in 1965, the International Congress on Fracture is today the premier international body for promoting worldwide cooperation among scientists and engineers dealing with mechanics and mechanisms of fracture, fatigue and strength of solids. Over the years, ICF has made considerable progresses in providing an international forum for highlighting individual and national accomplishments in the general fields of Fracture Mechanics, Material Strength and Structural Integrity. The international conference of ICF takes place every four years. The 14th International Conference on Fracture, will be a Pan-Europe Quadrennial and will focus on key issues in structural integrity, strength and fracture of materials and structures for the 21st century, including applications in geophysics, medicine, integrated modeling and engineering. It will comprise of invited lectures together with contributed oral and poster presentations covering all aspects of strength and fracture. The language of the conference will be English.

Title: PROGRESSIVE FRACTURE OF BRITTLE-DUCTILE PHASE LAMINATES
Author: Q. Chen, W. Tu, X. Chen and M-J Pindera
Abstract: Nano-laminates composed of brittle-ductile constituents are gaining increasing attention due to the potential for substantial toughness enhancement. The failure mechanism of these laminates is investigated using the CZM-based FVDAM theory with recently incorporated plastic capability. The effect of elasto-plastic layers on the progressive fracture of brittle layers is investigated to elucidate the role of plasticity on crack spacing and delamination.
